Top 10 Things to NOT do on Social Media

I read a great article the other day about the sind of social ediquet and the top 10 things to not do on social media. It was quite entertaining and spot on. The article can be found at https://www.pcworld.com/article/258898/the_10_commandments_of_social_media_etiquette.html

So just give ya the Cliff Notes the top ten things to not do are:

  • Commandment #1: Thou Shalt Not Tell Thy Friends Too Much.      Anybody that is experiencing something new tends to break this rule a lot.      Think Newly Wed, New Graduate, New Mom etc.
  • Commandment #2: Thou Shalt Not Turn Social Media Into Thine Own      Personal Pulpit. A lot of my FB friends are very engaged in politics      and local issues so I see a lot of this we well but being like-minded it      is more interesting than a bother.
  • Commandment #3: Thou Shalt Not Turn Social Media Into Thine Own      Personal Complaint Forum. This is the corollary to rule 2, no we dona™t      want to hear all of your preaching and secondly we dona™t want to hear all      of your problems either.
  • Commandment #4: Thou Shalt Not Pretend Thou Art CNN, ESPN, or TMZ.      Fortunately I dona™t see this from my FB friends, except during an      occasional Bull Dog gamea¦. And then I do want to know the score.
  • Commandment #5: Thou Shalt Not Pretend Thou Art a Guru. I love      inspirational quotes as much as the next guy but Whoa please not 12 at a      time. Ya know everybody is doing this now a days so wea™re seeing the same      thing 12 times.
  • Commandment #6: Thou Shalt      Keep Thy Size Obsessions to Thyself. Not seeing this too much but to the      point, no we dona™t care how many friends you have on Facebook. How many of      them would you recognize on the street if ya saw them? Just saying.
  • Commandment #7: Thou Shalt Not Be a “Social Media      Expert”. Hallmarks of the “social media expert”–a term      that always calls for the use of heavy air-quotes–include spamming people      about one’s stupendous social marketing skills, using social media to      discuss ways to effectively use social media, and trying to start      painfully forced discussions by posing clichéd questions (because, you      know, “engagement is everything”).
  • Commandment #8: Thou Shalt Not Put Social Media on Autopilot. I      didna™t know this was possible, but it does explain the days of massive      FarmICouldCareLessAboutville posts.
  • Commandment #9: Thou Shalt Not Share Information That Maketh Sense      Only to Thyself. Here’s a little secret: Social media isn’t a private      diary. If you’re going to share something with your friends, make it      something they’ll actually understand.
  • Commandment #10: Thou Shalt not Show Thy Friends Images That They      Shall Regret Seeing. The author says aœFor the love of all things      sacred, please: No more kissy-face self-picts (ladies) or shirtless mirror      photos (gentlemen).a And I concur, I also like to add no more group tongue      pictures with peace signs, and yes ladies no more bathroom mirror      pictures. You are really not looking into your soul that way.
