Many people relocating to Atlanta carrying an inaccurate image of the city. Whether they still think of Atlanta as a Gone With the Wind period destination or as the Coke capitol of the world, learning that Atlanta supports many thriving year round farmer’s markets can refresh that inner image so people can see Atlanta for what it really is: vibrant, lively, and growing.
1. Sweet Auburn Curb Market
This farmer’s market could be every grocery store you ever need, if you want to go to Old Fourth Ward every day. This Monday-Saturday affair is from 8am to 6pm, and carries fresh fruit, gorgeous produce, and amazing varieties of fresh fish. You can even eat at a restaurant while you shop if that’s something you’d enjoy. This staple of the neighborhood attracts hundreds of visitors a day, so try to get there as early as possible for the freshest selections. Parking is free with a validated ticket.
2. Decatur Farmers Market
This farmer’s market comes with a blog! With a list of vendors that’s updated before every Wednesday and Saturday appearance you know exactly what you’re going to find when you show up. Of course, if you prefer to wander and explore there’s nothing that says you have to check the list. If you know you want something that’s not going to be available, fret not: the website for the market lists a comprehensive list of vendors complete with their websites so you can get your organic produce and other delicious items even on an off day. The parking is metered.
3. Athens Farmers Market
This market has two days and unique items every week. While it carries pre-made food and some other unconventional items, you can still count on seeing 17 north Georgia vendors every week. You can find this market on Saturdays from 8am until noon and Tuesdays 4pm to 7pm, but the truth is that this delightful market often sells out. You want to be there as close to opening as possible if you want the biggest selection of mouth watering goodies. Free parking is provided to both locations, so turn up ready to shop and enjoy.
4. Farmers Atlanta Road Market
This farmers market was developed by St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church and is still held at this location. It’s mid-week time slot (Tuesdays, 4pm to 8pm) makes it a big hit with local families and cross-Atlanta farmer’s market experts alike. Though it still boasts artisan food crafters, it also has a good showing of smaller family farms and more local produce than some of the other markets. On average, the food has come less distance to be on your plate tonight, so pop in after school or work to see what this little place has to offer. Neighborhood parking is available.
Morningside Farmers Market was one of the first to really embrace locally grown food as the next step in organic, good to the Earth eating habits. You can look forward to Saturday mornings spent picking out 100% certified GMO-free organic vegetables, premade sauces and foods, fruits, mushrooms, and locally produced meats. To wed a little showmanship to the food offerings, Morningside features weekly demos from hot chefs in Atlanta, so you can pick up breakfast and show. Neighborhood parking is available, but often fills up fast! Get there early or get ready to walk.
